The snowy road to Cuchara

This series of pictures was sent to me by Brett's brother Mark, who is doing a lot of the work on our cabin.  Mark lives in Colorado Springs and has made many trips down to Cuchara lately.  During early February 2011 the snowstorms began rolling in.  The animals have their winter coats, but that wind is really COLD!  Temps got down to zero, with the wind chill well below that.  If I were that horse I'd definitely be in the barn.

The dikes look pretty with a dusting of snow.

I really don't understand why those rocks don't come tumbling down.  Can you see the profiles in the rocks?

I think this one is the Devil's Staircase.

Highway 12 goes from LaVeta to Cuchara, and then on down to Trinidad.  It's a winding road and pretty steep in some places.  We drove this road in a dark, foggy snowstorm on New Year's Eve.  It was pretty tense and scary, at least to my Texas eyes!

The next bunch of pictures were taken on Feb. 10, after the storms had gone through.  I have heard that Cuchara got about 5 feet of snow during the first two weeks of February!  Here's a nice view of the West Spanish Peak.

I'm always amazed at how much traction there is on a snow-covered road in Colorado.  If this were in Texas we'd all be off in the ditch!

A view of the Spanish Peaks from I-25.

Heading off toward LaVeta from Walsenburg.

The main drag through LaVeta. One of the Spanish Peaks is in the background.

Back on Highway 12 going to Cuchara.

One of the dikes, with it's sprinkling of snow.

Lots of snow on top of that roof!
This is one of the barns you see as you come into Cuchara.  Really cute!

Dakota Duke's General Store, in Cuchara, stays open all year long.
A log barn in Cuchara.

They do a great job of plowing the roads, they are out all the time.

One of the two turn-offs down into River Run, our subdivision.  Right now our house is the only one in River Run, although there is one other house in the area that was already existing when the subdivision was created.

This building hasn't been used since the ski area closed down 10 years ago.  It's for sale, though, and hopefully somebody will buy it now that there are plans to re-open and re-develop the ski area.
River Run looks beautiful in the snow, I can't wait to go there again!
